Bright, confident smile after professional teeth whitening at Downey Family & Cosmetic Dentistry
01 Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening in Downey.

Professional whitening that delivers real results: safer, faster, and more dramatic than over-the-counter options.

02 What is professional whitening

Whiter teeth, professionally.

Professional teeth whitening uses medical-grade bleaching agents that are significantly stronger and more effective than over-the-counter whitening strips, toothpastes, or kiosk treatments. The result is whiter teeth in less time, with safer application and longer-lasting results.

We offer two professional whitening options: in-office treatment that delivers dramatic results in a single appointment, and take-home custom trays that whiten gradually over 1 to 2 weeks. Many patients combine both approaches for the brightest possible result.

Both options are supervised by Dr. Hadis Reyhani, who evaluates your tooth health, sensitivity history, and aesthetic goals before recommending the right approach. This is the difference between professional whitening and store-bought kits: we customize the treatment to your teeth, not a one-size-fits-all gel.

Most patients see 4 to 8 shades of improvement with professional whitening. Results last from 6 months to 2 years depending on your habits. Whitening is one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments we offer and often the first step in a larger smile makeover plan.

04 Is it right for you

Most adults are candidates for whitening.

Whitening works best on natural tooth enamel that has yellowed or stained over time. Some types of discoloration respond better than others, and we will tell you honestly what to expect.

  • Adults with healthy teeth and gums
  • Yellow or brown stains from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, or aging
  • Patients with no untreated cavities or active gum disease
  • Patients without significant restorations on front teeth (crowns and veneers do not whiten)
  • Patients seeking a noticeable cosmetic improvement quickly and affordably
  • Patients comfortable with mild, temporary tooth sensitivity during treatment

Whitening will not change the color of crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding. These stay the color they were the day they were placed. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, we will discuss options for matching color across your full smile, sometimes including replacing older restorations after whitening.

05 The Process

Your whitening journey.

Choose in-office, take-home, or combination. Every option starts with a free evaluation.

  1. 01

    Free Evaluation

At your consultation, we examine your teeth, identify the cause of staining, and discuss whether in-office, take-home, or combination whitening is best for your goals, budget, and timeline.

  2. 02

    Pre-Whitening Cleaning

Most patients receive a routine cleaning before whitening. Clean teeth absorb whitening gel more evenly and produce better results. If you are due for a cleaning, we can often combine it with the whitening prep.

  3. 03

    Custom Tray Fabrication (Take-Home)

For take-home patients, we capture digital impressions to fabricate custom whitening trays that fit your teeth precisely. Trays are ready in 5 to 7 days. For in-office, this step is skipped.

  4. 04

    Whitening Treatment

In-office: a 60 to 90 minute appointment with whitening gel applied in stages and accelerated under safe LED light. Take-home: wear your trays with professional gel for 30 to 60 minutes daily for 7 to 14 days.

  5. 05

    Maintenance

Results last 6 months to 2 years depending on your habits. We provide professional touch-up gel for at-home maintenance. Routine cleanings every 6 months keep your smile bright between full treatments.

06 Common questions

Questions about whitening?

Whitening is usually our patients' first step into cosmetic dentistry. Here is what they ask most.

Ask a Question
  • Most patients see 4 to 8 shades of improvement with professional whitening, though results vary based on your starting shade, the cause of discoloration, and which treatment option you choose. We use a shade guide before and after to show you exactly how much your teeth have changed. Yellow-stained teeth typically respond best. Gray-stained teeth and those discolored from tetracycline antibiotics show more modest improvement.

  • Some temporary tooth sensitivity to cold is common during and immediately after whitening, and usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours. We use desensitizing gels and customize gel concentration to minimize sensitivity, especially for patients with a history of sensitive teeth. Most patients describe sensitivity as mild and entirely manageable. We can pause or modify treatment at any point if discomfort becomes significant.

  • Professional whitening results typically last 6 months to 2 years depending on your habits. Coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, and dark berries all cause re-staining over time. Most patients use professional take-home gel every 6 to 12 months for touch-ups, which keeps results bright for years. Avoiding deeply pigmented foods and drinks immediately after whitening, especially in the first 48 hours, extends results significantly.

  • Yes, in three meaningful ways. First, the whitening gel is significantly stronger than what is sold over the counter, producing dramatic results not achievable at home. Second, the application is supervised. We customize gel strength and treatment duration based on your teeth and sensitivity history. Third, custom trays for take-home whitening fit precisely to your teeth, preventing gel from reaching your gums and causing irritation. Store-bought one-size-fits-all options leak gel and cause uneven results.

  • Cost depends on whether you choose in-office, take-home, or combination treatment. We offer flexible payment options and walk you through pricing at your free consultation. Whitening is the most affordable cosmetic dentistry option we offer and often the entry point for patients exploring larger smile makeovers like veneers.

  • You can whiten your natural teeth around restorations, but the restorations themselves will not change color. This means whitening will create a noticeable color difference between your natural teeth and any crowns, veneers, or bonded fillings on visible teeth. Many patients plan whitening before having new restorations made so the new restorations can be matched to the brightened natural teeth. We discuss this carefully at your consultation if you have visible restorations.

  • Yes, when performed under professional supervision. Whitening gel has been used safely in dentistry for decades and does not weaken or damage tooth enamel when used as directed. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity. Patients with significant tooth decay, gum disease, or other untreated dental issues should address those before whitening, which is why a professional evaluation is the right first step.

  • With in-office whitening, results are visible immediately at the end of the single appointment. With take-home trays, you typically notice meaningful improvement within 3 to 5 days, with full results at 10 to 14 days of daily use. Combination treatment (in-office plus take-home) produces the most dramatic and longest-lasting results.

07 Why us

Whitening with care.

Whitening done wrong causes sensitivity, uneven results, or gum irritation. Done right, it is one of the safest cosmetic treatments available.

  • Customized to your teeth

We adjust gel strength, treatment duration, and approach based on your specific tooth health and sensitivity history. No one-size-fits-all kits.

  • Professional supervision

Dr. Reyhani evaluates your teeth before and during treatment to catch issues that store-bought kits miss, like decay, gum disease, or weakened enamel that should be addressed first.

  • Bilingual care

Treatment planning, sensitivity management, and aftercare guidance available in English and Spanish.

  • Long-term smile planning

Whitening is often the first step in a larger smile plan. We help you understand how whitening fits into your broader cosmetic goals, and what comes next if you want more.
