01 Traditional Braces

Traditional braces in Downey.

Reliable, time-tested orthodontic treatment provided in-house by Dr. Lee, our orthodontist.

02 What are traditional braces

Proven orthodontics, all under one roof.

Traditional braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by a thin archwire that gradually moves teeth into their ideal positions. Despite the rise of clear aligner therapy like Invisalign, traditional braces remain the gold standard for orthodontic treatment, particularly for complex cases involving significant misalignment, bite correction, or growing patients.

Most general dental practices refer braces patients out to a separate orthodontic office. We do not. Dr. Lee, our in-house orthodontist, treats braces patients at the same Downey office where you already come for general care. One location, one familiar team, integrated dental and orthodontic care from start to finish.

Most traditional braces cases take 18 to 36 months from start to finish, with adjustment appointments every 4 to 6 weeks. Dr. Lee treats orthodontic patients across all ages, from kids ready for early intervention around age 7, to teens who need full alignment treatment, to adults who finally want to fix what has bothered them for years.

Traditional braces remain the most affordable orthodontic option for many patients and are typically covered more comprehensively by orthodontic insurance benefits than clear aligners. We verify your benefits before treatment begins, walk you through every option, and help you make the right decision for your smile and your budget.

03 Your options

Three types of braces, one trusted orthodontist.

Modern braces are not what they used to be. Here are the three options most patients choose between.

  • Metal Braces

The most common and most affordable option. Modern metal brackets are smaller and more comfortable than the braces of a generation ago. Patients can choose colored elastics at each adjustment, popular with teens who want to personalize their look.

  • Ceramic Braces

Tooth-colored ceramic brackets that blend in with natural teeth, making them less visible than metal braces. A popular middle-ground for adults and teens who want a more subtle appearance without the cost of clear aligners.

  • Self-Ligating Braces

A modern variation that uses specialized brackets which hold the archwire without elastic ties. Often results in fewer adjustment appointments, less friction during tooth movement, and shorter overall treatment time for some cases.

04 Is it right for you

Traditional braces work for nearly every case.

Where Invisalign has limits, traditional braces have answers. They handle the most complex orthodontic cases reliably and predictably, and they remain the right choice for many patients.

  • Patients of any age, children as young as 7 for early intervention, teens, adults at any stage of life
  • Complex orthodontic cases including significant crowding, severe bite issues, or rotation
  • Patients who need precise tooth movement that aligners cannot reliably achieve
  • Patients who prefer not to manage the daily wear-time discipline that aligners require
  • Patients seeking the most cost-effective orthodontic treatment, often with strong insurance coverage
  • Cases requiring jaw growth modification in younger patients
  • Patients with bonded retainers, severe TMJ concerns, or other dental conditions that affect aligner candidacy

Not every case calls for traditional braces, and not every case calls for Invisalign. Dr. Lee discusses both options honestly at your free consultation and helps you choose based on your specific situation, your timeline, your insurance coverage, and your lifestyle. The right answer depends on you.

05 The process

Your orthodontic journey, step by step.

From first consultation to final retainer, here is what to expect.

  1. Free Consultation

Meet with Dr. Rachel Lee at our Downey office. She examines your teeth and bite, discusses your goals, and determines whether traditional braces or Invisalign is the right fit for your case.

  2. Records & Treatment Planning

Digital X-rays, photos, and 3D scans capture a complete picture of your teeth and jaw. Dr. Lee designs your full treatment plan and walks you through expected timeline, costs, and results.

  3. Bracket Placement

At a single 60-90 minute appointment, brackets are bonded to each tooth and the first archwire is placed. There is no drilling and no anesthesia is typically needed. You leave with braces and detailed home care guidance.

  4. Adjustment Appointments

Every 4 to 6 weeks, you return for an adjustment. Dr. Lee changes wires, adjusts tension, and tracks progress against your treatment plan. Each visit takes 15 to 30 minutes.

  5. Removal & Retention

After your final adjustment, brackets are removed and a custom retainer is fabricated. Wearing your retainer as directed is essential, without it, teeth can gradually shift back over time.

07 Common questions

Questions about braces?

Braces are a multi-year commitment and a meaningful investment. Dr. Lee answers every question honestly so you can make the right choice.

Ask a Question
  • Most cases take between 18 and 36 months from start to finish, though simpler cases can be completed in as little as 12 months and complex cases involving significant bite correction may run closer to 36 months. Dr. Lee gives you a specific timeline at your consultation based on your individual case. Treatment time depends on the complexity of your alignment issues and how consistently you attend adjustment appointments.

08 Why us

Orthodontic care, in-house.

We are not a general dental office that refers braces out. We are a full-service practice with a trusted orthodontist on staff, and that combination is genuinely better for most patients.

  • One location for every appointment

Orthodontic treatment, routine cleanings, and any other dental needs are all handled at our Downey office. No bouncing between separate offices, no juggling multiple parking lots and check-in processes.

  • Bilingual care across the entire process

Our team and Dr. Rachel Lee provide care in English and Spanish. Treatment planning, financing conversations, adjustment appointments, and home care guidance are all handled in your preferred language.

  • Coordinated scheduling for families

Multiple family members in treatment? We schedule adjustment appointments together when possible. Cleanings can often be scheduled back-to-back with orthodontic visits. We respect your time.

  • Integrated dental and orthodontic care
